How to Play an F minor Chord on GuitarThe F minor Bar Chord (Em Form)

First up, we’re going to cover the Em form of the F minor bar chord. It’s called the Em form because it uses the same shape as an open E minor chord, but it’s moved up to the first fret. It’s a great place to start if you want to learn how to play an F minor chord on guitar!

To play the Em form F minor bar chord, first use your first finger to bar all six strings on the first fret. Next, place your third finger on the A string on the third fret. Finally, place your fourth finger on the D string on the third fret and play all six strings.

 


How to Play an F minor Chord on GuitarThe F minor Bar Chord (Am Form)

Next up is the Am form F minor bar chord. This is known as the Am form because it uses the same shape as an open A minor chord, but it’s moved up to the eighth fret. First, use your first finger to bar the top five strings on the eighth fret. Next, place your second finger on the ninth fret of the B string. Then place your third finger on the tenth fret of the D string. Finally, place your fourth finger on the ninth fret of the G string and play the top five strings.


How to Play an F minor Chord on GuitarThe F minor Chord (Dm Form)

Up next is the Dm form of the F minor chord. As you may have guessed, this chord is the same shape as an open D minor chord. It’s just moved up to the third fret with the root note on the F note of the D string. First place your first finger on the third fret of the D string. Next, place your second finger on the fourth fret of the high e string. Then, place your third finger on the fifth fret of the G string. Finally, place your fourth finger on the sixth fret of the B string.

 

This one can be difficult, but if you want to learn how to play an F minor chord on guitar, I highly recommend it. It’s worth practice because the sound is just exquisite; it’s certainly my favorite voicing of the F minor chord.


How to Play an F minor Chord on GuitarEasy F minor Chord (from Em Form Bar Chord)

You might recognize this shape from the post on playing an A minor chord on guitar. If you move the shape down to frets one and three, it becomes an F minor. To play this chord, first use your first finger to bar the top three strings on the first fret. Next, place your third finger on the third fret of the D string and play the top four strings.

 

 


How to Play an F minor Chord on GuitarAnother Easy F minor Chord (from Am Form Bar Chord)

 

We’ve seen this shape before in the post on how to play a C minor chord on guitar. If you move it up to the eighth fret, it becomes an F minor. First, place your first finger on the eighth fret of the high e string. Then place your second finger on the ninth fret of the B string. After that, place your third finger on the tenth fret of the D string. Finally, place your fourth finger on the tenth fret of the G string and play the top four strings.
